ESPN Blog Buzz does not Legitimize Sports Blogging. If you watch ESPN at about 10:50 A.M. Eastern you will see a little segment that started about 1 month ago called “ESPN Blog Buzz”. I wrote a post about it. I talked about how great it was, and I still think so. Nothing has changed there. I think it is great that ESPN is reaching out, even if it is for a small segment once a day.
The point of this post is to clarify something I said on Twitter. Yes, that social media site still exists. Someone asked me about the Blog Buzz and I said that it helps legitimize sports blogging. Well, due to 140 character limit I could not explain what I meant . I even tried a couple more times, and I still do not think it came over the way I wanted it. That has a lot to do with the 140 character limit, my feeble writing skills, and the vastness of this topic.
All I meant was, for people that have absolutely no idea what a blog is, this gives them an idea of what is going on. For people that have no respect for blogs, this lets them see that blogs are not all malicious diatribes attacking all whom they may devour.
I did not mean, in any way, that Sports Blogs are not legitimate. I did not mean, in any way, that sports blogs need big daddy ESPN to untie it’s shoe laces so we could all latch on and catch a ride. I know that the sports blogosphere was created by the hard work of many great writers/bloggers. Too many to list here, but Deadspin, Awful Announcing, and Yahoo sports blogs are great examples.
So I apologize to anyone that misunderstood my very poor use of the English language. I realize the words I used evoke much more meaning than the simple example I was making in my head. Sports Blogs would be fine if there were no ESPN. Sports blogs are better than ESPN. ESPN is 40% commercials, 30% bad programming like World’s Strongest Man, 15% actual sports coverage, and 15% pandering to the sports stories that they want to make popular. ( Yes I am talking about every move USC makes and the ridiculous coverage of the 2nd-3rd best QB in the draft, Mark Sanchez).
If anyone did not understand it, or the post I wrote on ESPN blog buzz last month, I hope you accept the apology. I also hope in the future people could just email me ( ethanjaynes@comcast.net ) if there is a miscommunication. Sports Blogs are legitimate. They are the voice of the people. They are the voice of the fans.

ESPN is only scared because they know that bloggers are and always will be out of their control. They have been used to having complete power over the sports “entertainment” business for so long and they would never legitimize blogs until they feel they have dominated blogs.
