8R Videos 13: Ranking Miami’s World Championships

Posted on 02 February 2010 by David Chalk

EVERY TUESDAY David Chalk, renowned, acclaimed and beloved baseball writer from 7th Inning Stache, Bugs&Cranks, SportsUntapped and occasionally Big League Stew throws up Eight Random Videos to entertain and/or enlighten right here on NESW SPORTS.

So this Sunday’s Super Bowl will be the 10th NFL title game in Miami — but Miami has also hosted two World Series, an NBA Finals and a Stanley Cup Finals. So for your random enjoyment, I present this ranked list of the Top 13 World Championships In Miami.

13. XLI Colts-Bears
12. XXXIII Broncos-Falcons

The last two Miami Super Bowls were both pretty awful.  Two quarterbacks who had earned reputations as horrible big game chokers, won their first and second Super Bowls against pretty piss poor competition.  Manning fluked his way to his first and hopefully only title by out-QBing REX GROSSMAN.  Elway “earned” his second title handing the ball to Terrell Davis to narrowly defeat Chris Chandler’s Falcons, who were coached by his old boss Dan Reeves.  I won’t even offer videos of these super abortions.

11. XXIX 49ers-Chargers

This Super Bowl was mainly nice for Steve Young to finally get a crack, and because the 49ers broke up that awful Aikman run.  Here’s random video of Frank Gifford’s open to ABC’s broadcast:

10. II Packers-Raiders

Boring game, Lombardi’s last as Packers coach.

9. XXIII 49ers-Bengals

Montana salvages the game, but the Ickey Shuffle lives on even in defeat.  Jerry Rice wins the MVP, but the winning pass is Montana to John Taylor.

8. 1996 Stanley Cup Finals: Avalanche-Panthers

A sad finals in that Colorado wins in their first year not being the Quebec Nordiques, but at least the warm weather hockey team got swept.  Here’s random video of CBC icon Don Cherry and the Macarena.

7. V Colts-Cowboys

Good in that the Cowboys lost.  This video has an incredibly fluky Colts TD pass from the game, and the winning field goal kicked with 5 seconds left.  Bad in that Baltimore later became team-stealing whores, doing to Cleveland what Indianapolis did to them.

6. 1997 WS Marlins-Cleveland

I thought this was a great World Series when I started watching it near the end of Game 7.  A boring matchup, but it was hard not to like either team.  It was great to see Bobby Bonilla and Gary Sheffield finally get a ring, and Kevin Brown set himself up for a nice payday with the Yankees.  And the Marlins were managed by MLB MHOFer Jim Leyland.

As for random video, how about WS highlights set to Miami’s own Gloria Estefan! (Gloria also performed at Super Bowls XXIX and XXXIII.)

5. XIII Steelers-Cowboys

Dick Enberg closes the broadcast.  Steelers become the first team to win three Super Bowls. Dallas loses its third Super Bowl — all three in Miami.

4. X Steelers-Cowboys

Pat Summerall calls the end of the game as Roger Staubach fails to rally the Cowboys.

3. 2006 NBA Finals Heat-Mavs

The best NBA Finals in a long time.  While Dallas was already planning a parade, the Heat came back from 0-2 down once they got back to Miami.  Shaq got his fourth ring before Kobe, Dwayne Wade emerged as a superstar, and Jason Williams got his ring.

2. 2003 WS Marlins-Yankees

An expansion team beats the Yankees in the World Series for the second time in three years.  The Marlins were led by future 2007 Red Sox champions Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell.

1. III Jets-Colts

Hard to argue with the obvious.  Here’s the broadcast’s open:

Egads. Super Bowl V was horrible. Maybe worst ever. In no way better than SB XXIII. Fail.

1983 Orange Bowl? Unless this includes pro sports only.
