Better Know a Draft Slider (Tony Pike QB-Cincinnati)

One of the little known aspects of the NFL draft is the fact that many top prospects avoid taking a shot at the NFL Combine. Some don’t run. Some won’t throw. And some won’t do the position drills.

And why do these things happen? Consider the case of Tony Pike. Pike is what most experts would consider to be the top quarterback in the second echelon. He’s a tough kid who won a lot of games when he was healthy. But beyond the injury question? There were times when Pike struggled with his accuracy.

Times like the NFL Combine. This was the scenario where the potential Joe Flacco was supposed to pass Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow and be the third quarterback taken. That did not happen. He missed the comeback routes, and throws to his right outside the numbers. And with such a performance? The best case scenario is that he remain as a late second rounder.

If not? You could see Jarrett Brown and or Dan LeFevour overtake him. But the Jarrett Brown story is another time for another day.
