Slovenia Is A Country? (Map & World Cup Guide)

Posted on 17 June 2010 by David Chalk

Friday, the United States faces a must-win game against something called Slovenia.  Look — we made a map for you, and have done some research so you can be prepared.

According to the CIA, Slovenia is “slightly smaller than New Jersey.”  So it would be hella embarrasing if we lost to something smaller than New Jersey. It’s located right where the back leg of Italy meets the butt crack of Europe, and used to be part of Yugoslavia.  They’re 25th in the FIFA World Rankings, and have been as high as 23rd.  We’re ranked 14th.

This is Slovenia’s 2nd World Cup, they also made it in 2002.

More from the CIA:

  • Despite its small size, this eastern Alpine country controls some of Europe’s major transit routes
  • Dissatisfied with the exercise of power by the majority Serbs, the Slovenes succeeded in establishing their independence in 1991 after a short 10-day war
  • Historical ties to Western Europe, a strong economy, and a stable democracy
